Our professional and dedicated team is motivated to ensure that each and every client receives the ideal balance between rehabilitation and wellness, therapeutic engagement and relaxation.
Post traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD for short, is a mental health issue that is triggered by a traumatic event. It can occur as a result of either witnessing or experiencing such events and includes symptoms such as severe anxiety, nightmares, uncontrollable thoughts and flashbacks. Many individuals who go through terrifying events may have a hard time coping or adjusting for some time, but do not develop PTSD since self-care and time can help them to recover. However, symptoms that worsen or last up for several months or years, and hinder regular functioning are usually signs of PTSD.
Trauma and substance abuse tend to co-exist in a number of ways. People who have unresolved trauma may develop drug, alcohol or behavioural addictions to numb their unwanted emotions, which can result in what is known as a co-occurring disorder. Studies show that up to 50% of adolescents with PTSD develop substance abuse issues, and also suggest that PTSD can make it harder for them to stop using.
There are numerous ways of treating PTSD. The Dawn uses our original Twin Pillars approach as a main treatment method, along with other complimentary techniques. The primary method of treatment for all of our clients involves Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, or CBT, which encourages our clients to discuss their issues and change the way they think and act. In addition to CBT, other forms of PTSD therapy include:
EMDR is designed to improve the distress and heal from symptoms linked with traumatic memories through physiologically based therapy that helps our clients view the event in a less traumatic way. It comprises bi-lateral eye movements, which aid in moving painful memories from the mind’s forefront into the long-term memory. Only eight sessions already dramatically reduces symptoms of PTSD.
MBCT has some similarities to CBT but incorporates mindfulness as well, which allows people to recognise how they are feeling, thinking and experiencing in the present moment to prevent negative mental loops.
TRE yoga helps release tension or stress that is associated with PTSD in a relaxing and restorative way.
Ordinary events can act as a trigger for those with PTSD, and is one of the hardest things about having this condition. Bright lights, fireworks, gunfire and other incidences can jolt one’s senses and cause them to ‘return’ to how they felt when the original traumatic incident occurred.
Inpatient rehab allows clients to seek the help they need and recover properly, in an environment that removes all the daily stresses. Additionally, they are surrounded by caring professionals who have extensive knowledge regarding their condition and can help them 24/7.
